What does Alabama’s adoption process look like?

On Behalf of | Jun 18, 2020 | Family Law

Whether you represent a couple or you are looking to raise a child yourself, adoption can be an exciting venture for all those involved. However, bringing a child into your family dynamic is not a simple matter of signing forms and paying fees. There are many phases to the process and, if you are serious about adopting, you may want to get an idea of how an Alabama adoption works.

Do you meet the requirements?

In this state, adopting parents must be over the age of 19 and, if married, must have been married for at least three years. Additionally, one of the spouses must be a U.S. citizen. Other factors like your health and wellbeing, the size of your home and your willingness to go through a background check will all have their influence.

After you submit your application

Following the submission of your application, you will need to attend a series of meetings in which you are educated on the adoption experience. A social worker will also interview you and whoever else lives with you.

Once you are approved

If approved for adoption, you will receive information about children you may potentially bring into your family. You will review this information and determine if you believe they are a good fit for your home. Then, there will be pre-placement visits and, if all goes well, they may move into your home. Once the child has lived with you for three or more months, you can seek legal affirmation for the adoption of your child.
